Adhesive capsulitis, also known as frozen shoulder, is a very painful condition with no known cause. It is
named appropriately based on the symptoms where the person is unable to move the shoulder past a certain
point. The shoulder is a very complex joint that is crucial to many activities of daily living. Persons
suffering with frozen shoulder are surprised that suddenly they can't even lift the arm enough to apply
deodorant.
Adhesive capsulitis has three defined stages labeled as the painful stage, the adhesive stage and the recovery
stage. Although recovery is usually spontaneous, treatment with gentle but persistent physical therapy may
provide a better outcome, resulting in little functional compromise by the end of treatment.
